By Kemmyo Taira Sato.
This commentary on the Tannisho, a central work for modern Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land) Buddhism, is one of the most detailed examinations of the text in English. The author provides a new translation of the text along with a careful analysis of the work that is ground in traditional Shin scholarship and his own religious experiences as a Shin Buddhist who has practiced in both Japan and England. Rev. Sato's new commentary will be a valuable resource for practicing Buddhists and of great interest to those studying the development of Japanese Buddhism in the 20th century.

Great Living by Kemmyo Taira Sato
I have read two other books by the author and very much enjoyed them. Tannishō is so very important to understanding Shin Buddhist thought it is of course a favorite of mine and I love reading commentaries on conical texts of Jōdo Shinshū. The author uses different phrases for words such as Shinjin, Anjin and a few others that usually are understood in BCA parlance. Overall this is an interesting tome which includes verifiable evidence that Yuien-Bo actually existed and headed a temple in the Kanto region shortly after the Shōnin’s passing into the Pure Land. It also gives a brief history of Hōnen and Shinran’s development of Pure Land as a separate school of Mahāyāna Buddhism .
