    Even nicer than anticipated

Posted by Rose DiFonzo on 15th Aug 2021

This book is a treasure. 1. It opens with overwhelmingly positive readings selected from both within the Shin tradition and from the wider Buddhist faith, from Shinran to Thich Nhat Hanh. 2. The core sutras are given in kanji, hiragana, romaji, English prose translations, and some English verse. 3. There are even some items in the book with multiple translations with slightly different emphasis. 4. There are tons of songs. 5. Someone has put incredible effort into creating a service book that is accessible from so many ways. Everything that you need is in this book.

I really enjoy this book which not only offers traditional chants but brief explanations, excerpts from the Dhammapada and haikus.

This contains a wonderful explanation of items and gestures you will encounter at a temple as well as it contains many speaking, singing and chanting documents with some pages explaining context and significance of these verbal actions.

It's the same service book used at my church. I am happy to have my own copy at home for study. Thank you!

    Organized and Informative

Posted by Robert Crawford on 1st Oct 2017

This is no ordinary service book. It provides all the things you would expect in a service book, but also explains the reason they are included. For the beginner to a Buddhist service it provides a comforting explanation as to what to expect. For the more scholarly minded members, it provides references for where the books inclusions came from and why they are relevant. This is a valuable addition to a Buddhist's library.

Excellent for Daily Practice or In Groups

Posted by Sensei Shaku Mui on 27th Sep 2016

I recently purchased this book and was expecting a smallish kind of a chant book. The book I received was beautifully and expertly edited. Not only does the book contain daily chants for personal use but is also perfectly presented for our sangha devotional periods. While I am not a fan of liturgical music, I was impressed by the songs that take up about half the book. I found it is perfect for the devotional aspects. I would have liked to have seen some commentary, an explanation of where and when the chants arose and their meaning on both a conventional and transcendent level. This was, however outside of the scope of the book, and wisely left to my own exploration as the words mean different things to different people and even at different stages of our lives or moods. All in all, the book is great! I have used it daily in my personal practice and added it to our sanghas list of must have liturgy. Well done!
